DIY McQueen Costume (2) (390x640)

UPDATE as of Jan 2016:  This costume has proven to be our most popular post and item!  After more interest than I anticipated a DIY version of 4 Cars shirts is now available ONLY in the weeks leading up to Halloween in our online shop.  Please sign up for emails on the right or follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to be alerted as soon as this item becomes available.

Beginning with something as simple as an e-mail for a Lightning McQueen tank top, quickly snowballed into an adventurous, speeding, race…

I designed and converted six of the most beloved, warmhearted, and memorable residents of Radiator Springs into T-Shirts and tank tops for the 2013 runDisney Half Marathon in DisneyLand, California for Danielle of Live, Run Grow, her husband, and their friends.

lightning-mcqueen (150x94)Lightning McQueen…  This tank top is inspired by Zach’s 2012 Halloween costume and 3rd birthday ensemble.  Zach’s costume was converted and adjusted for an adult sized red 100% cotton tank top.  The front of the bright red Old Navy tank top is decorated with McQueen’s number one sponsor’s logo “Rusteze.”  Along the inner seam of the tank top is McQueen’s signature lightning bolt and racing number 95.

The back of the bright red tank top is decked with each of McQueen’s additional sponsors…

Bringing all 6 of the racers together as one, Danielle requested a quote from each of the characters be added to the back of each shirt…  McQueen’s Quote:  “KaChow!”

A Mini Side Note:  After multiple items of washing, and the wear and tear of a Runner (or 3 year old for that matter), the bright colors from the original printer fabric will begin to fade.  As well, since the printer fabric is NOT stitched onto the t-shirt, the corners can begin to peel.  In the case of the peeling edges, just hit it with the iron again, or fabric glue and you will be all set.  Regarding the fading, I’m not too sure how to fix that, but in that time maybe you Cars’ fan will have grown a size up and you can create a Planes t-shirt for them.

If you L-I-K-E this Cars t-shirt, you will L-O-V-E our other Cars inspired itemsprojects, and party

  1. how do you make the iron ons? I want to make this but I not sure where to start.

  2. I have steop-by-step instructions for this T-shirt available in my post: Lightning McQueen Halloween Costume: http://wp.me/p25vVh-yE
    Hope this helps XO

  3. thank you so much!! one more question…when you print on the fabric with fusible webbing, do you have to print it as a mirror image like with iron on transfers? or does it not get flipped onto the shirt? I’m off to Jo-Ann’s today, yippee!

  4. For the fabric paper which I used on this tshirt, you do not flip the image.
If you use a different transfer paper, you may need to flip the image.
    Good luck! XO

  5. thanks!! I’m excited to make it! 🙂
