Date Night Jar

June 138_1 (2000x1245)

When we got married, 7 L-O-N-G and blissful years ago, I never thought we would be that couple who schedules a Date Night, every few months, or every week.

Wedding 123

When reality set in; lets be honest here, reality was 2 kids and a crazy work schedule, scheduling a Date Night turned out to be only way my husband and I were able to get one-on-one time, without our adorable rug-rats nipping at our toes.  Then we quickly turned into the couple who kept on forgetting to schedule our scheduled Date Night.

Until one day…  During an adventure in getting lost in Pinterest, I stumbled upon the magical Date Night Jar  These are some of my favorites:

Cliff Notes explanation of the Date Night Jar:  On slips of paper describe Date Nights for you and your spouse.  On Date Night, pull a paper and plan accordingly.

Too whopping cute and so simple (Why didn’t I think of this?!?), huh?!?  Well for someone like me, where making a decision on plans, events, dining, movies, OK, basically anything outside of the scheme of a kid’s activity or designing a room, I’m a fish out of water.  A Date Night Jar is 100% up my alley, plus, I have COMPLETE control over all the date ideas.

Lily & Frog Supplies:

  • June 145 (2000x1774)Jar with a lid – or any kind of a container, i.e. mason jar, Tupperware, vase, etc.  You could use an old shoe box if you wanted to, just air it out a little first
  • Paper for writing dates – ANY paper you pick is good

Really, it is this simple…

Lily & Frog How-To:

Truly…  This is a project which you can completely make ALL your own; Go ahead, cut corners, skip steps, and adjust it to work for you and your spouse.  Make your Date Night Jar, your own.

Begin with your Date Night Ideas…  This is the entertaining part.  Basically I searched “date night ideas” Holy-Moly!  There are a whole bunch of ideas for a wonderful, adventurous, or cheeky Date Night…  Even some ideas, well I’m not too sure where people come up with these ideas, I haJanuary 032 (1546x2000)d to close my eyes!

These are some of the more helpful ideas from The Nest:

Once you have grouped all of your Date Night Ideas, print them out (or hand write them…  I told you, SIMPLE!) on paper, cut them out, fold them up and slip them into your Date Night Jar!  When Date Night arrives, pull a slip of paper and there you have it – Instant Date Night!

And of course, I went off and designed our Date Night Jar to have a few more layers…

As I was compiling all of my Date Night ideas, I realized some of the Date Nights required a little extra planning, i.e. a couples message, overnight at a bed and breakfast, etc.  You can’t just pull these Date Night Ideas out of the jar and high tail it to a Spa on the same day you want your massage.  This is why I created the Date Night Index!  Why, yes, our Date Night Jar has an index…  I’m that geeky!

January 036 (2) (2000x1270)

Our Date Night Jar Index & ExplJune 148 (1124x2000)anation:

  • Dinner & Movie Combination – These dates are a dinner and movie which go together with one another.  SIDE NOTE:  This one is my favorite Date Night Idea!
  • FREE – YES a F-R-E-E Date Night – These dates are free…  no planning
  • Afternoon out and about – These dates are for an afternoon out of the house, they may require a little planning, but not too much
  • Date Night out of the house – These dates are for an evening out of the house, they may require a little planning, but not too much
  • 24-48 hour notice Date Night – These dates  require planning, snag this date night at least 24-48 hours before
  • Date Night IN – These are dates which you will be spending in the confines of your cozy home, there is a chance you need to know information on this card in advance to prepare a meal.

Date Night Jar Rules:June 140 (1475x2000)

  • If there is a menu planned for a Date Night, include the link for the meal on the slip of paper (you could forget it after a while)
  • If there is a location you are going to, include the address and other information (you could forget it after a while)
  • Pick cards in the afternoon because; there is a chance you will be preparing a meal for dinner and need to shop.
  • If there is a RULE on the card, follow the RULE.
  • HAVE FUN!

Once I had all of my Date Night Ideas listed, I grouped tJune 147 (1507x2000)hem based on the Date Night Jar Index and assigned each a color.  Then I printed all the Date Night Ideas on colored paper, for example, Dinner & Movie Combination Dates were assigned purple and printed on purple paper…  Makes sense, right!?!

Cut each Date Night ldea out of the paper, fold up the paper and toss them into the Date Night Jar.  Remember to print out your Date Night Index as well.

There you have it…  SIMPLE!  Now you just need to plan a date for you to use your Date Night Jar!

What are some of your favorite Date Night Ideas?  I would love to hear about them!

Bed and Breakfast…  Call a sitter for overnight…  And score a weekend away at a secluded Bed and Breakfast that’s close enough to home that you don’t spend hours traveling in the car.

Date Night –  Dinner and Movie Combo

Knocked Up:  A favorite line from the movie…  “I loooove breakfast!” As a nod to the stoner/munchie connection, we suggest a Southwestern Chicken Pileup, which Ben’s stoner friends would surely enjoy.

Wedding Crashers:  All we can say is, “Crab cakes and football. That’s what Maryland does!” Make some crab-and-corn chowder and accompany it with baba ghanoush and pitas. Why the odd combo? Owen Wilson’s character, John, lovingly refers to Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) as “baba ghanoush” throughout the film.

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle:  Dine on sliders, fries, and a huge Mountain Dew. The best part: You have the recipes, so there’s no need to wander around all night like these freaks did.

Jaws: Since Amity Island is, well, an island, dinner has to be seafood. Wash it down (and take the edge off!) with a Captain Nemo cocktail.

Casablanca:  This one’s easy: Moroccan meatballs over couscous accompanied by Moroccan lentil salad. Here’s looking at you, delicious.

The Godfather (Parts I & II):  Time for some of our Italian favorites thanks to Francis Ford Coppola’s mafia epic. But leave the gun; eat a cannoli for dessert.
